Optimization & Insights with Online Cable Monitoring

Preventing failures from defective or ageing MV power cable assets relies on measurement practices of which insulation loss (tan-delta) and Partial Discharge (PD) detection are the two main techniques. PD measurement offers the important benefit that it can pinpoint local defects and assess cable integrity. While such measurements can be performed at intervals, online PD measurement can give continuous control without having to take a cable out of service. This presentation reviews how continuous online monitoring brings greater control over ageing cable assets while using fewer resources. It also explains how sensor placement, signal integrity and noise all need to be carefully considered.
