Increasing HVDC voltages requires bigger and heavier equipment, increasing the mechanical strength required from support insulators. These must support high compression forces, combined with increased flexural stresses coming from seismic requirements, high wind-loads or short circuit forces due to the magnetic coupling between reactors.
