Overview of CIRED WG 2017 – 1: “Test Recommendations for Ground Screen Power Cable Connections” by Klaus-Dieter Haim

In recent years, a large number of failures of cable accessories have been caused by poor installation or inferior design of cable screen connections. This can result in local overheating due to high contact resistance and finally to insulation breakdown. Unlike the situation for conductor connections, governed by IEC 61238-1-3, there is still no international standard for design and testing of cable screen connection. For this reason, in 2017 CIRED organized a Working Group “Test Recommendations for Ground Screen Power Cable Connections”. Their final report has now become available and can serve as the first step toward a standard. This presentation reviews the main results of this report and its application to real screen connections.
